Includes papers of James (1702-1778), Joseph, and Samuel A. Otis. Papers of James Otis, Sr., colonel in the French and Indian War, self-educated lawyer, and judge of Barnstable County, Mass., contain letters regarding his law practice, service as a judge, and as a public servant in other various positions; and correspondence with his sons Joseph, Samuel A., and James (1725-1783) Otis. Papers of Joseph Otis relate to his career as a merchant and ship-owner, with some correspondence concerning the commissioning of whaling voyages; as a colonel of the 1st Barnstable County Regiment of the Mass. Militia and as a brigadier for the county during the Revolutionary War and a controversy with the Barnstable Committee of Safety while he was in the latter position; and as muster master responsible for the enlistment of men from the county into the Continental Army. (Cont.) Also, papers of Samuel A. Otis and his merchant business in Boston, particularly in connection with his brother Joseph.

James Otis Jr. was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts on February 5, 1724/5. After receiving his B.A. in 1743 and his M.A. in 1746 from Harvard College, he went on to study law in Boston. Otis' work as a lawyer and writer helped the Revolutionary cause in the 1760s and 1770s. He served in the Massachusetts state government and continued as a lawyer while dealing with more and more pronounced mental illness. He died on May 23, 1783. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
